Ask 100 women what gemstone they would prefer getting as a gift, more than 99 of them will take the name of diamond. The diamond is certainly the most precious and the most loved gemstone where humans are considered. No one knows how much blood has been shed over them, how many hearts have been broken and how many kings have turned into paupers. Yet now, the market is slowly awaking up to something called a lab diamond or synthetic diamond. When buying a diamond ring, people are now considering the option of synthetic diamonds too.

Natural vs. synthetic diamonds

It is said that a diamond is just another piece of coal that performed better under pressure. It is a fact indeed that diamonds are formed through crystallization of carbon. A piece of carbon goes through high temperature and pressure and it becomes a diamond. These rough diamonds are then pushed upward through vents in the earth’s surface. They are then mined, cut and polished to create the stone the entire world cherishes.

A synthetic diamond, on the other hand, is created artificially. There are two techniques used in the creation of lad diamonds. The first one is called High Temperature High Pressure process and the second one is called Chemical Vapor Deposition process. Experts have, over the years, perfected the art of creating these diamonds and now these are making their entry into the diamond market.

How to differentiate between the two?

It is actually very tough to differentiate between a natural and a synthetic diamond. When you are looking for a diamond for your diamond ring you must be absolutely sure you are buying a natural diamond. Of course, if you are planning to buy a synthetic diamond for your diamond ring there is no such caution needed.

Many gemologists find it difficult to differentiate between these two types of diamonds. It takes a real expert to differentiate between them. However, when talking of these diamonds please find few differences as given below. But note that one has to be a real expert to find the differences.

What gives away a synthetic diamond is its perfection. A natural diamond will always have some flaw, no matter how minute it is. A synthetic diamond, on the other hand, will be absolutely perfect.

The natural hues and colors that are there in a natural diamond are not present in a synthetic diamond. The weight of a synthetic diamond is also more than a natural diamond of the same carat. And of course, the cost of a synthetic diamond is much lower than a natural diamond.

Now that you know these differences, ensure your jeweler goes through the checking process and sells you the diamond you need for your diamond rings.
